Making snow at Duluth

Snowmaking Begins at Spirit Mountain

Duluth, MN –  The snowmaking crew at Spirit Mountain has been at the ready for weeks, watching the thermometer and anxiously waiting for the temperature to drop.  Ryan Abel, Spirit Mountain’s new Trail Maintenance Manager and head of Snowmaking Operations, said, “It’s time.”

While temperatures still aren’t ideal for maximum snow production, Spirit Mountain wants to do everything possible to ensure a good track for Snocross.

Snowmakers at Spirit Mountain will continue working around the clock while temperatures allow, until there is enough base snow to provide a quality product for skiers and snowboarders. Spirit Mountain Recreation Area is hoping to open on Thanksgiving Day.  Prime conditions for snowmaking require temperatures at 20 degrees or colder for a sustained period of time, combined with low humidity.

The AMSOIL Duluth National Snocross event is scheduled to take place at Spirit Mountain, November 26-28.
