Think of the 2001 ZR 800 as Arctic Cat’s first big-bore statement in the modern era. It married a potent twin engine with meaningful chassis tweaks, setting riders up for what came next.
In many ways, it foreshadowed the power twins to come and gave racers a road map for where performance sleds were headed.
This sled proved Arctic Cat could deliver massive torque without resorting to triple-cylinder complexity, streamlining maintenance while still delivering jaw-dropping performance.
Riders found it equally at home on groomed trails and in open lake runs, with enough top-end pull to embarrass larger displacement triples. Its adaptability meant it could be tuned for aggressive race conditions or weekend trail cruises without losing character. More importantly, it signaled a major philosophical shift toward rider-focused engineering in the big-bore category.

I had a 03 efi version if this. The best all-around sled I ever owned. Wicked torque, big top end speed, good fuel mileage, turned like it was on rails. super dependable. Put over 15,000 miles and never had it apart. The next 2 owners never did any engine work either. When I lost track of it, it had over 22,000 miles. A very low revving twin. I miss that sled. I thought that the future sleds that I bought would be better, and in some ways, they were. But the total package never measured up to the ZR800
