1991 Halloween Blizzard

Waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy back 27 years ago on Halloween, Mother Natured delivered one of the all-time great weather events for a large swath of the Midwest. Dubbed the Halloween Blizzard (10 inches of snow fell that night), it was a trick-and-treat of epic proportions, with upwards of 30-40 inches of snow that eventually blanketed parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin.

It paralyzed cities and caused hardship for some. But it gave snowmobilers the greatest candy of any Halloween ever.

For two days friends and I snowmobiled all over the Twin Cities. On freeways, highways and throughout neighborhoods where snowmobiling wasn’t legal. It was incredible.

This happened in the days before decent storm prediction, and the weather people completely missed this one until it was already happening. Thus nobody was ready for it, myself included. It was a gift for winter lovers, and a scary-as-hell fright for everyone else.

Nothing like that predicted for tonight, however I’m hearing reports of snow up north this coming weekend.

Winter’s coming, happy Halloween!

  1. wow yeah i was insulating my shop that night as kids came trick or treating and had to get home because of the snow…rode my new 90 prowler to breezy point and back to ideal corners on the hiway and ditches til 3 in the morning Still have that sled! 27 years ago time flies when we are having fun!

  2. Rode the freeways because the ditches were too deep. I had bought a new left over 91 ext so i rode almost two day straight with very little sleep it was epic for sure!!

  3. And as if the recent snow storm predictions have been any better, I think not.

If anything, ‘the sky is falling’ has become more prevalent when there is a hint of any snow accumulation more than a couple of inches in our area. It sure leads to packed grocery stores and a run on milk and bread. When the snow doesn’t amount to much rarely are any excuses given only that ‘we dodged a bullet’.

  4. I remember that storm and I live Chicago…. Dave Schwartz was gonzo at The Weather Channel over this fall snowstorm, so after work me and one my brothers load up the two place and plan to drive as far into the snow as possible, find a motel and then just start riding, my trusty tow rig at that time was an 86 Dodge Aries wagon with a mighty 2.5L four banger, we didn’t even get a mile away from the house when the radiator **** the bed. Bummed!!!

  5. I believe it was dubbed Halloween Megastorm ’91. At least in Duluth it was. We had just shy of 40″ of snow there. I used our steel garbage can to shovel the driveway. Twice.
