Quick Facts:

  • Used an updated ZR chassis with an aluminum bulkhead, offering better rigidity and strength.
  • Featured the Sno Pro drivetrain: gears and clutch kit tailored for performance (based on builder reports).
  • Widely regarded among riders as more race-ready than standard ZR models of the era.

The 1998 ZR 440 Sno Pro was Arctic Cat’s first purpose-built snocross race sled, but also raised the bar in all disciplines of racing. A sled designed from the ground up for the track, not retrofitted from a trail model.

It introduced race-calibrated suspension, chassis geometry, exhaust valves and engine tuning that would become the benchmark for factory race sleds. For racers, it meant right out-of-the-box race sled.

Its lightweight build and aggressive stance gave riders more control in tight corners and around technical tracks. This level of “race-ready” performance from the get-go forced competitors to step up, sparking an arms race in snocross sled development. More than just a product, it was the first clear sign that Arctic Cat was fully committed to dominating professional snowmobile racing.

The arrival of the 1998 ZR 440 Sno Pro allowed established racers to advance their careers further, and also allowed some up-and-coming racers to become household names…Prince Albert’s Blair Morgan is one of those.

  1. That sled changed everything about racing. When we raced, it wasn’t uncommon for the finals to be all Team Green from 98 to 02.

  2. The motor was really strong for 440 at the time. Winter I trail rode it and it ripped. I disappointed a lot of 700/800cc sled drag racing short distances like a 1000ft or so. If it was longer then there CC took over. On the grass we put Team Arctic in the winner circle big time in 440,500,and in the finals of 600 Stock. Even 440 Improve Stock it was a winner. Only bummer was Haydays we put the SkiDoo guys in the trailers by winning are heats. But in the final I drew the crap lane and took 2nd plc. It was ether all Cats winning or the top 3 that year.
