Quick Facts
- Debut of the 998cc Yamaha-built Genesis Turbo triple in the ZR chassis
- Factory-rated at ~180 hp, but real-world tests regularly measured 195–205+ hp
- Electronic Power Steering (EPS) optional beginning in later model years, but 2017 debuted with the revised ARS II front suspension
- ProCross chassis with strengthened bulkhead + updated steering geometry
- Clutching: Team Rapid Response drive + Rapid Reaction driven
- Widely regarded as the fastest production trail sled of its era (and arguably of all time)
The 2017 ZR 9000 Thundercat redefined what “fast” meant on snow.
When Arctic Cat and Yamaha partnered on the 998cc Genesis Turbo triple, the result was a four-stroke engine that instantly became the gold standard for durability, smoothness, and big, effortless power. Arctic Cat dropped that powerplant into the proven ProCross platform, refined the steering geometry, stiffened the chassis, and unleashed a sled that felt as composed as it was unrelenting.
Riders described the throttle as “limitless.” The turbo spooled almost instantly thanks to a ceramic-coated turbine wheel, a massive intercooler, and Yamaha’s exceptional engine management. Unlike previous turbo sleds, the 998 triple delivered power everywhere: cornering, charging through bumps, or flying down the straights.
The ZR 9000 Thundercat also separated itself from the pack with real-world consistency. It was the rare unicorn: a 200-horsepower trail sled that could be hammered for hundreds of miles with no complaints.
The 2017 Thundercat cemented Arctic Cat’s reputation for monster-four-stroke performance and became the benchmark that competitors measured themselves against for nearly a decade. Even today, when people say “I want the fastest sled alive,” they’re usually talking about this one or something trying to dethrone it.
Thundercat riders: what did you dominate? Lakes, trails, or both?
That color combination was just great! Best looking sled that year and it still works today.
I just bought a ’17 barn find. People have stopped me multiple times on the trail to talk about the livery. Helps that Cat hasn’t really updated the styling, but it holds up nonetheless!
Hope Arctic Cat keeps the 998 available. It is one of the best snowmobile engines of all time. Keep the EPS on it, stick the new Acat shocks, and the new gauge on the procross and keep the old Tcat on point. There is no replacement for displacement. I have owned every generation of Tcat and my 22′ with EPS is my current favorite ( until they build my next favorite. LOL )
There is a kit you can buy from Arctic Adventures out of NY that will retrofit the G8 to the Pro Cross chassis.

Seems like they could freshen it up a bit and keep that chassis for 4 strokes – seat and skid improvements, incorporate the new gauge. With hopefully a good winter this year it will be exciting what they do for 27.
What’s the gripe with the seat? I have 400mi on my “new to me” TCat and I have no complaints. I liked the skinnier seat on my Ski Doo 850, but I had to throw my weight around more to keep it level in corners. The cat just stays flat, and I LOVE IT.
The 2017 didn’t have the ARS2, the 2020 and newer ones do.
I am unaware of any bulkhead strengthening or steering geometry changes.
The sled is indeed strong, and I’ve logged several hundred miles on one, but it has several large driveline and other flaws. The intercooler is completely vulnerable to ice build up, the oil tank rollover valve is prone to freezing and not venting, and 2020 and newer ones vent the oil that drips from the airbox right on to the primary clutch, the top chain case sprocket can get side loaded and pop off the inner circlip that holds it in line with the chain and lower sprocket, the screws holding the roller inside the chain tensioner come loose, it’s a hassle to change the engine oil and chain case oil, and it has the procross brake caliper bearing spinning on the driveshaft problem too. Not really worth the weight and design flaws.
