In 1967, Arctic Cat dropped the Panther, and the game changed. Sleek black paint. Aluminum tunnel. Slide-rail suspension. It was the first Cat sled that looked fast standing still…and proved it on the trail. Riders didn’t just go snowmobiling, they started living it. The Panther made Arctic Cat a household name and a garage staple.
- First sled with performance and polish
- Set the tone for Arctic Cat’s image for decades
- Kicked off the Panther legacy still alive today

Even back then, Arctic Cat touted a “low center of gravity” as a major selling point, a nod to handling and rideability that was rare for the time. Fast-forward to today, and the same design goal drove the engineering behind the Catalyst platform. Nearly 60 years apart, the mission hasn’t changed: better control, better balance, better ride.
Got a memory or photo of the original Panther? Drop it in the comments!!
Where would we be today without slide rail technology? Looking back, what a breakthrough in technology. Their competitive racing roots fueled so much innovation.
My first snowmobile that drove myself on family trail rides was a 1967 8hp Panther! What I wouldn’t give to have this sled again! I was going to post a photo of me on it in 1969 (I was 11 years old!), but I can’t figure out how to do it?
Yep I can still hear that P8K when I close my eyes. Even though I preferred the 1969 P12K that replaced it. Lol. Back when 4hp more was a big deal. Folks don’t know what a HUGE improvement the first two generations of slide rail were over everyone’s bogie suspensions. Properly set up, it just did everything better.
Glen…how are you doing? Good to see your name up here. Once of the original VSCA hooligans.
Pluedy: I’m semi retired and working as a building substitute teacher for a local school district. Loving the summers off. S LOWLY building the mini shop of my dreams and parts hunting for a 1972 Cheetah project. Sold everything off before I relocated. But kept this one because it came through the old family dealership when new. I’ll build the 399 mod stock of my dreams in the coming months. Still a hooligan. I just don’t run with the big dogs anymore. Peace and happiness to you.
I’m going to try and post a photo of my 67 P15 with the screamin’ Hirth 300. I bought it from the original owner in Fremont, Wis. and kept it just as he’d modified it. Single Montana pipe really let it breath.
Thr 1966 Panther is the 1957 Chevy Bel Aire of snowmobiles which topped all sleds even today because this sled all brands tried to be like thr Panther. Most failed. Sure missed tthe model name though. Today Cats are actually after thr Panther! Look carefully at thr side view you will see it’s there. However it is shaped the same as thr mascot logo. you will see! Happy 60 years Panther!
