(10/11/2011)

The first person who answers all of the mid-school, diabolical questions correctly, wins an infamous ArcticInsider Gift Pack.

ArcticInsider Mid-School Trivia Contest for Arctic Cat fans

1. Let's start with an easy 3-in-1 question...who is this guy, what year is the shot taken and why is he smiling?

2. Here's a truly great man whose three sons went on to great success in snowmobile racing (one of whom won the I-500). Name the guy pictured here.

4. The guy above appeared in the famous Arctic Cat ad that accompanies the shot (in fact, the mug-shot of him was from the very same photo-shoot for this advertisement). What's his name?

5. Two of the people in this shot are reknowned Team Arctic racers, with multiple class victories in the I-500 between them. Who are the two, and what's this family's name?

6. Okay, he's not on an Arctic Cat...whatever. This guy's name is Chad Wiech. He owned a company in the early-to-mid-1990s that sponsored many top Team Arctic racers, including Brad Pake. What was the name of his company? Bonus points if you can explain why Chad is racing with a Pro-Vue Prescription Goggles decal on his sled, yet he's actually wearing glasses (and no goggles!)?

7. Finally, this future hall-of-famer won the I-500 on an el Tigre. Who is he, and what year was this photo taken?

I can't answer all those questions and I don't know Don Shetler... but I would say that maybe artdcat should receive some credit for naming five different nicknames belonging to Mr. Shetler? Impressive and entertaining!
John Sandberg says:

For sure artdcat gets some points for his answers, especially the Shetler one. I laughed out loud twice while reading it, which is worth oodles of Sandberg Happiness Bucks. Dontego Deluxe...sensational.

Per no. 5, I'm guessing Mr. Sandberg wouldn't put two Dyrdahl pictures in the same quiz. ;)

By combining various responses, all questions have been answered correctly except one.

So the next step is for someone to answer with ALL the correct answers (including the question that nobody has yet gotten).

Clue: the question that nobody has gotten correct is a SLIGHTLY-trick question.

The correct answers have been given, just not in one single answer.

John Sandberg says:

I'm feeling like the inflexible taskmaster school teacher who nobody likes, because TECHNICALLY both RacerDawn and Chad Steen have answered correctly.

The answer I was actually looking for on question #6 was Klymax! (spelled with the exclamation point for extra-credit). Todd Ulschmid, a contest-winner from earlier this year, got it! I'm very impressed that so many people knew that M'Ocean was the parent company of Klymax!

Anyway, I won't quibble over the technicality. So I'm going to soften up and award this contest to Dawn, for being the first to answer all correctly.

A couple of notes:
-The photo of Hibbert is at the at the Day 2 finish line of the 1990 I-500, in Duluth, Minn. Due to lack of snow south of Duluth, the race was called after 2 of 3 days (everyone knew prior to the start of the second day that it would be a 2-day race). While it wasn't official when I shot this pic, everyone knew that Kirk was the winner based on time.

-Gerald Dyrdahl was a great person who did a lot for cross-country snowmobile racing in NW Minn, and who took the final checkered flag after a long fight against cancer. It was a privilege to know him.

BTW, Gerald is racing in jeans, with no snowpants. Classic!

-RacerDawn hints at a story about Don Shetler and that sled in the ad. I don't remember hearing it so, in order to claim her prize, she needs to tell it. (If it's too embarrassing for public consumption, you need to send a private message Dawn.)

-Photo of Klymax!-Chad in the 1995 Grand 500 cross-country, just south of the border on Day 1. That race would be won by Brad Pake.

-Joey Hallstrom photo is from the 1980 I-500, taken during a rare moment when he wasn't on the blacktop.
Bucky says:

Mr. Sanberg

Since I have offically been declared old. I was wondering if "RacerDawn" was able to tell you the story of the sled in the ad shoot. I remember the long, hot day we shot it, I just don't remember any more of the story...cuz a little, most of, ok, all of my AC career was in a self induced alcoholic haze.
Jason says:
11/26/2011 4:53:00 PM

Remembering Mr. Wrong just made me crack up! Don Shetler would do anything for AC even though it was in a haze as he said.
Don can also masterfully deal with the Teamsters!
